Georgia Receiver Qualifies For NCAA Championships in 100m

Georgia redshirt freshman wide receiver Arian Smith chose to run track this spring, and he certainly made contributions to the Bull Dog track and field team.

Smith finished in eighth place with a 10.18 100m at the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship earlier this month — his first collegiate track meet — but blew by his old time this weekend at the NCAA Track and Field East quarterfinals, UGAWire reports.

Smith qualified for the NCAA Championships with a 10.10 100m.

Smith has also qualified in the 4x100m relay with fellow Dawgs Matthew Boiling, Elija Godwin and Delano Dunkley, who set a UGA record with a 38.57 at the SEC Championships, per UGAWire.

Smith played in the last four football games of the 2020 season, catching a 31-yard pass for a touchdown against South Carolina and making a 55-yard reception in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl against Cincinnati.

Smith was nursing a wrist injury earlier this year and missed spring football, but he should be good to go for the fall football season.

Head coach Kirby Smart said he loves Smith's energy and dedication.

"He got injured before camp, so when you come back from that injury, it's not like you come back and you jump right in," Smart said last month. "He hasn't been able to do much. He's working his way back in and he certainly has a trait that we're looking for in vertical speed. He's raw. He's really working hard. I love his attitude and his energy. So can he help us? Hopefully. Right now? I don't know if he can help us right now because it's not that easy. He's got to develop. He's a player that came from a really small school to Lakeland and he's gotten better and better and better, but he's still got a ways to go to get where he needs to help us."

Smart says Smith has impressive vertical speed but needs time for recovery and development.
