Drew Brees Giving Out Scholarships To Walk-Ons In Honor Of Jason Kelce

Since Jason Kelce announced his retirement Monday, current and former NFL stars have been busy paying their respects to the 13-year veteran. But perhaps the coolest tribute came courtesy of Drew Brees.

The former All-Pro quarterback announced Friday that restaurant chain Walk-Ons, in which he's a part owner, will honor Kelce by awarding 13 scholarships to walk-on collegiate athletes across the country. The move is a nod to Kelce, who walked on as a linebacker for the University of Cincinnati before switching to offensive line.

And although it gets some financial backing from Brees, the restaurant itself was founded by walk-ons — LSU basketball's Brandon Landry and Jack Warner.

"These scholarships represent more than just financial aid," Brees said. "They’re a salute to the relentless spirit and unwavering dedication that drives athletes to excel, mirroring the qualities that Jason Kelce showcased throughout his career."

He added: "With this initiative, your inspirational spirit will continue to guide and motivate future generations. Thank you and here’s to the spirit of the walk-on."

It's important to note that Jason Kelce did not die — he simply retired from the NFL. But it's a really nice gesture, nonetheless.

After Kelce walked on at Cincinnati, he went on to be named second-team All-Big East twice and was selected in the sixth round of the 2011 NFL draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. He spent his entire career with the Eagles, raking up seven Pro Bowls, six first-team All-Pro selections and a Super Bowl win.

The bar is high for these 13 walk-ons.
