Kansas City Chiefs' BJ Thompson Out of Hospital Days After Cardiac Arrest

Kansas City Chiefs player B.J. Thompson is out of the hospital, requiring surveillance at Kansas University Hospital since suffering cardiac arrest at the team's facility.

The 25-year-old suffered cardiac arrest during a special teams meeting last Thursday. Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker first alerted medical personnel at the Chiefs facility of Thompson's seizure and cardiac arrest. As reported by OutKick's Armando Salguero, Thompson was "stable" just a day later. Thompson required CPR at the team facility and was on a ventilator overnight, leading to the positive update Friday morning.

Thompson's attorney, Chris Turnage, released a statement following the player's discharge from the hospital Monday night.

"The family thanks everyone for their prayers and wants to especially thank the Chiefs medical and training staff for their rapid response and professionalism throughout this situation," Turnage shared.

Rick Burkholder, Chiefs vice president of sports medicine and performance, shared the account of Butker reporting the seizure on Thursday.

"With BJ, when he had this seizure, Butker immediately ran towards the training room and grabbed [assistant athletic trainer] Julie Frymyer and [assistant athletic trainer] David Glover, and then grabbed me," Burkholder told reporters on Friday.

"We went into the room. Eventually, [assistant athletic trainer] Tiffany Morton and [assistant athletic trainer] Evan Craft came in as well as, with this facility we have a doctor's office down the hall, and Dr. J.P. Darche from Kansas University Health System was there, he came up and assisted.

"As a team, we tried to stabilize BJ and put him on the floor while he was still seizing, and then he went into cardiac arrest. So our team of that group of people provided CPR for him."

The second-year defensive lineman was a fifth-round pick in 2023 out of Stephen F. Austin in 2023. No timetable for Thompson's return was provided on Monday as the DL works on his recovery at home.
