Canadiens Kaiden Guhle Suspended For Slashing Flyers Travis Konecny From Bench

Montreal Canadiens defenseman Kaiden Guhle has been dealt a one-game suspension for doing one of those things you definitely can't do at any level of hockey: slash an opponent while you're standing on the bench.

The Canadiens are on the outside looking in at the NHL playoff picture, but that doesn't mean they can't play spoiler. They were looking to do that on Thursday night when the Philadelphia Flyers — who are fighting to stay in the playoff spot — came to town.

Everything pretty much went the Habs' way and they took a 4-1 win.

However, things did get a little testy at times and that's what led to the incident between Guhle and Flyers forward Travis Konecny.

Juraj Slafkovsky got tied up with Konecny — who is always more than happy to mix it up a little bit — and while it got a little nothing really happened.

The two separated, but with just a few ticks left on the clock in the second period, Konecny went gliding past the Habs' bench, Guhle decided to stick up for his boy…

…which is great, you just can't do it the way he did.

Was it the biggest two-hander the NHL has ever seen?

No, not even close (Marty McSorely would like a word), but you can't be doing that from the bench.

It's funny because I think if that happened on the ice, it would have been a two-minute minor and we wouldn't be talking about it. Although, ironically, Guhle was not assessed a penalty for this during the game.

However, because Guhle had his skates planted on the bench, it's suspension-worthy.

The Department of Player Safety can be a little goofy, but I think they got this one right. It's a nice slap on the wrist for what was a very bush league move on Guhle's part.
