Boston Bruins Sign Pat Maroon, The Same Player That Team Broadcaster Jack Edwards Fat-Shamed Two Years Ago

Pat Maroon to the Boston Bruins might not be the flashiest NHL deadline move of the 2024 season, but it’s certainly got the funniest subplot.

The Bruins acquired the Minnesota Wild right-winger for a conditional sixth-round pick in 2026. It’s a fairly low-risk deal; the Bruins desperately need an experienced forward who can be a physical presence on a relatively soft team, and it only cost them only a pick three drafts from now. It’s all upside, with barely any risk.

Normally, that’s where the analysis and news of this deal would end, and we’d spend more time discussing how the Vegas Golden Knights continue to be masters of evading salary cap restrictions with their big-name signings

But Maroon’s arrival in Beantown sets up a reunion with Bruins announcer, Jack Edwards. The two of these guys have a history, and it’s not great.

Edwards Once Insinuated That Maroon Is Fat

In 2022, Maroon was a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning, and they visited Boston. During the broadcast, Edwards suggested that Maroon had been overeating and not taking care of himself physically.

That didn’t sit too kindly with Maroon. But instead of responding with a nasty comeback, he proceeded to make a donation to "Tampa Bay Thrives," an organization that helps individuals with mental health causes related to body image.

Edwards later came around and offered a sincere apology to Maroon for his comments.

"It was not intended to be mean-spirited. I went to Pat and explained that," Edwards said. "He got his feelings off his chest, and I listened to all of it. I was not going to walk away. I let him go as long as he could. I wanted him to know I respected him as much as any NHL player for lasting as long as he has. Every single player who has played in the NHL is an unbelievable athlete, and I made that clear."

The guys did handle this like gentlemen, which was certainly a step in the right direction.

Nevertheless, I wouldn't blame you for thinking this still could be an awkward reunion between the two. But Edwards seems genuinely excited to have Maroon on the team.

Looks like all systems go in this situation. Now if Maroon could just help the Bruins win a Stanley Cup…
