Alex Rodriguez Timberwolves Group Denies Statement, Says They Fulfilled Requirements

The saga of Alex Rodriguez and his pursuit of the Minnesota Timberwolves continues to get weirder.

After several false starts, about a week ago, Alex Rodriguez and Marc Lore found the final investors they needed to finish the purchase of the Timberwolves franchise.

The group submitted the necessary financial documents to complete the transaction, according to media reports, and all seemed to be progressing as planned. Until Thursday afternoon.

Current owner Glen Taylor announced in a statement that the 90-day window for the Rodriguez group to complete the purchase of the team expired on Wednesday.

"I will continue to work with Marc, Alex and the rest of the ownership group to ensure our teams have the necessary resources to compete at the highest levels on and off the court," Taylor said. "The Timberwolves and Lynx are no longer for sale."

Except, well, Rodriguez and Lore apparently disagree. A spokesman for Lore and Rodriguez told Jon Krawczynski that they don't agree with the statement Taylor released on Thursday.

"We are disappointed with Glen Taylor's public statement today. We have fulfilled our obligations, have all necessary funding and are fully committed to closing our purchase of the team as soon as the NBA complets its approval process. Glen Taylor's statement is an unfortunate case of seller's remorse that is short sighted and disuprtive to the team and the fans during a historic winning season."

What in the world is going on?

Alex Rodriguez Bid Dead? Or Not?

The Timberwolves have been one of the NBA's best teams this year, sitting at 50-22 and tied for the third best record in the league behind the Boston Celtics and Denver Nuggets. Given the franchise's trajectory, it's no wonder why A-rod and his investor group wants to increase their stake and become majority owners.

But Taylor's statement seemingly put an end to that possibility. Though according to some reports, their purchase may not be entirely dead after all.

The New York Post reported that the case will head to a mediator to determine whether or not the Rodriguez-Lore group did in fact meet the deadline. There's also the issue of NBA approval, which would likely be decided in April.

So…Rodriguez may become a majority owner? Or maybe not. There's only one thing for certain though; it's been a wild Thursday in the NBA.
