Ric Flair Says WWE Hall of Famer Was Paid With Cocaine

When I was in my early 30s, I had a short stint slinging beef at a butcher shop. One afternoon, I couldn’t help but overhear a conversation between the store owner and an entry-level employee regarding pay. In exchange for making a delivery, which meant he was entitled to extra cash for gas, the novice employee asked instead to be paid with a bag of beef jerky and a 2-liter of Coca-Cola.

Odd as it may seem, that jerky-loving employee and WWE Hall of Famer Roddy “Rowdy” Piper share a similar mindset about compensation. Piper just preferred cocaine to Coca-Cola.

During a recording of his new podcast, Ric Flair Wooooo Nation Uncensored, Ric Flair opened up about a bout against Piper in the Dominican Republic in 1982 and said, “They gave me $5,000 and they gave Piper cocaine and $500 bucks. He was happy.”

At the time, Flair was slated to square off with a local wrestler for the NWA Heavyweight Championship. The match was a big deal in the Dominican Republic, but Flair hesitated to make the trip down south because of previous travel issues. To make for a smoother trip, Flair asked for Piper to be added to the card so they could travel together.

Next thing you know, it’s snowing in the Dominican Republic…at least in Piper’s Pit. Wooooo! Indeed.

The powder form of payment Piper preferred shouldn’t come as a total shock. Aside from bagpipes and body slams, Piper was known to indulge in the occasional party favor or two. Prior to his death in 2015, Piper had been arrested for DUI and was also recorded taking a bong hit at a Gathering of the Juggalos.

Two takeaways from this story: Piper seems like he would’ve been a hell of party. And had he opted for some jerky and a 2-liter instead, maybe he’d still be around.
