Reporter Confuses Byron Leftwich for Todd Bowles Following Bucs Super Bowl LV Blowout

It seems like it never fails during a Super Bowl media session that a reporter screws up, either asking a ridiculous question (“How long have you been a black quarterback?”) or in the case of the postgame Sunday after the Bucs beat down on the Chiefs, screwing up the identity of a couple Bucs coordinators altogether.

A reporter got egg on his face when he was looking to ask Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles a question. The only problem was that the person at the podium at that moment was none other than Tampa offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich.

The reporter in question was identified as “Michael Donaldson.”

Thankfully Leftwich, who I’m sure has been asked plenty of dumb questions over the years not only during his playing days in the league but also as a coordinator, seemed to handle the mix-up in stride.

“Hey, coach, great win. Congratulations. Going into the game, what was your No. 1 goal on the defensive side to shut [Patrick] Mahomes down, to shut that high-powered offense down. What was your guys’s No. 1 goal going into that game?”

Leftwich simply deflected, telling Donaldson that it’s a much better question for Bowles.

“To shut Pat Mahomes down? I think you got the wrong guy. I had nothing to do with that. That was [defensive coordinator] Todd [Bowles].”

Here’s video of the confusing exchange.

Credit Leftwich for laughing off and handling the situation as well as any pro could, and not letting the mix-up ruin what was just about a perfect night as the Bucs took home their second Lombardi Trophy.

  1. Go read Doug Farrar’s take on this at Yahoo Sports. His headline: “Reporter shamefully mistakes Byron Leftwich for Todd Bowles after Super Bowl LV.” I read the article so you don’t have to, and will surmise it here: “SEE! SEE! WHITE SUPREMACY! EVERYONE IS RACIST!” Here’s his closing salvo:

“I am not going to ascribe any specific misunderstanding or malice to Michael Donaldson in this case because I don’t even know who Michael Donaldson is. To do so in this case would be to assume, shamefully, that he’s just like everyone else.”

“Just like everyone else.” Good Lord, I’m glad I don’t hate myself like these people pretend to hate themselves.

  2. Love it. These reporters are the ones who are always lecturing the rest of us about how racist we all are, guarantee that’s not an outlier. Theoretically they are way above us, practically is another story. Kind of like when the Democrats call all those opposed to unopposed immigration racists and then Elizabeth Warren says if we don’t have immigrants who’s gonna clean houses or cut lawns.

    • It’s all about projection who you are onto people you think are your enemies…I’d bet the most superficial, bigoted, racist, sexist, and hate filled people are more in the media industry vs. the overall general population.
