Patrick Mahomes Restructures Contract, Giving Chiefs Extra $17 Million To Spend This Offseason

Just moments after Tom Brady’s contract was restructured in Tampa, it was announced that Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes’ contract had been restructured as well. Madden’s cover man is reportedly saving the Chiefs $17 million in cap space by turning that money into a signing bonus.

This is a smart move that should help the team immensely heading into free agency.

Now that the Chiefs have let go of Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz, they’ll need to find upgrades on that offensive line. Those moves alone saved $18 million, and then with Mahomes’ restructure–they now have $35 million to play with.

Reports say that the team hopes to bring back OT Mike Remmers, who thrived at RT last season, so we’ll see what type of moves the team makes to protect Mahomes.

  1. Probably because I don’t understand NFL rules, contracts, the salary cap, and the inner details…but if it is the same money as a signing bonus…why wouldn’t every highly paid QB do the same thing?

    • My guess is it may be a tax basis thing or more QB’s care about the money than the rings. Patrick already has guaranteed generational wealth so he is chasing rings like Brady. I say good on him for doing it.

      • I agree. Brady has always taken less than he could have demanded. Manning, Farve, Wilson, Rodgers, all wanted to be ‘the highest paid player’, and Brady wanted rings. Hopefully Mahomes is more in that line of thinking. Even his crazy contract is so long, that by the end he’ll be way underpaid.

  2. its kinda sad to see what Mahomes is up against. the entire league has pinned its hope on one guy transforming QB for a decade.

i think the pressure on that guy is going to get overwhelming. the super bowl was a preview of what super man must do. in a team sport.

meanwhile deshaun and dak and russell are running out of time to win … 7 SB (if brady wins another one, how many QB’s will just quit)
