Team USA Overtakes China In Gold Medals At Tokyo Olympics

Team USA edged out second-place Team China in total gold medals earned at the Tokyo Olympic Games, their third consecutive Games nabbing the most golden honors. USA also beat China in total medals, 113 to 88. Japan came in third place with a total count of 58.

The 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games finally came to an end this weekend after the events faced postponement in 2020 due to the pandemic.

The summer festivities began with a lethargic effort from Team USA, which let China get out to an early lead in the gold medal count. However, a late push from Team USA -- sparked by swimmer Caeleb Dressel, who earned five Olympic gold medals — secured the count.

Team USA Women's Basketball defeated Japan, 90-75, late in the Games to win gold. The Men's Basketball team also scored gold at the Olympics after their win against France, 87-82, on Friday night.

The United States won their pursuit for gold by only one medal over China, 39 to 38. America also earned 41 silver and 33 bronze medals in Tokyo, which makes these Games America's second-best Summer Olympic games performance since the '88 Games in Rio (121).

While some doubted the notion of American exceptionalism at the start of the Olympic Games, the United States of America proved the haters wrong once again. Team USA still remains a beacon of freedom and performance across the globe for runner-up regimes to look to for inspiration.
