Novak Djokovic Wins Again, Will Likely Play In Aussie Open

The Men’s Australian Open doesn’t commence until next Monday, but tennis superstar Novak Djokovic has already won his match. Though last week he was denied entry into Australia because he is unvaccinated, the Australian court decided to reinstate Djokovic’s visa this morning, likely clearing a path for the world’s top-ranked player to defend his 2021 title.

He had previously sought a medical exemption to compete in the Australian Open, citing the fact that he did not need to be vaccinated since he had recently recovered from COVID-19. But when he arrived in Australia last week, Djokovic had his visa pulled and began quarantining in a Melbourne hotel.

Djokovic announced the judge’s decision in a Monday tweet and also declared that he still waits to participate in the Open.

“I’m pleased and grateful that the judge overturned my visa cancellation,” said Djokovic. “Despite all that has happened, I want to stay and try to compete (in the Australian Open). I remain focused on that. I flew here to play at one of the most important events we have in front of the amazing fans.”

Djokovic, 34, has won a record nine Australian Open titles. He practiced on Monday in preparation for next week’s Grand Slam, though the country’s immigration minister may still “exercise a personal power of cancellation” and order Djokovic deported prior to the start of the tournament.

For now at least, Djokovic is free to train and compete.

“For now I cannot say more but THANK YOU all for standing with me through all this and encouraging me to stay strong,” tweeted Djokovic.

The Australian Open begins on January 17th. Though Djokovic didn’t get a jab, he still has a shot.
