No Matter The Result In Jacksonville, Urban Meyer Is Done With College Coaching

For anyone hoping to see Urban Meyer back coaching on the college level someday, it’s time to move on. After finally making the jump to the NFL level, the new Jacksonville Jaguars head coach is there to stay.

According to Meyer, there is “zero chance” of college return.

“Zero chance of that happening,” Meyer said, via Jaguars Wire. “What coach [Nick] Saban went through, I don’t know. That’s Coach Saban’s business. It’s completely different. My mind is set.

“There’s going to be some losses show up here that we’re not used to, and to say that’s going to be easy, no, that’s going to be miserable. I hate losing, and we all do. But the reality is that you’re going to lose. Hopefully, you win more than you lose, but that’s something that’s going to be new to me. I have to get my mind right, and I’m working on that.”

And there you have it, folks.

It’s funny that Meyer specifically brought up Saban.

It’s an obvious comparison because Saban left LSU for the NFL, spent two years with the Miami Dolphins, and then came back to the college game. It’s funny because Saban said time and time again that he wouldn’t be accepting the Alabama job, only to accept the Alabama job.

Will Meyer do something similar? It’s possible. He’s only 56 years old, but he’s also dealt with health problems during his runs with Florida and Ohio State. College football is a 365-day a year job, while the NFL provides a little more flexibility.

It could also depend on whether Trevor Lawrence becomes a franchise quarterback.

After signing Daunte Culpepper instead of Drew Brees, Saban never got a chance to have a franchise guy on the NFL level. It’s hard to win without a quarterback, which probably made things frustrating. If Lawrence is somehow a bust, we’ll see where Meyer stands then.
