Niners Jimmy Garoppolo Not Pleased Team Made Move For No.3 Pick in Draft

Jimmy Garoppolo has more or less been told he's the starter in San Francisco at quarterback when the 2021 season starts.

But of course a lot can change between now and September when the season begins.

Reports say Garoppolo was not happy when he heard that the 49ers had made a move with the Miami Dolphins to acquire the third overall pick in next month's NFL Draft.

Niners coach Kyle Shanahan made a call to Garoppolo before the deal was announced to the media and fans, letting him know about the deal.

San Francisco will almost certainly take a quarterback with the 3rd overall pick.

“Obviously no one wants to hear that. I know that he wasn’t totally excited about it, like you’d expect,” Shanahan said.

“But Jimmy handled it great like he always does. We were very straight up with each other, and I told him how we felt. This doesn’t change any of his circumstances right now. He’s still coming in here and trying to lead this team.”

Garoppolo is in an odd position with the Niners, as injuries sidelined quite a bit during his time with the franchise.

At 29 years old, he's got a lot of good football left, but the Niners also have the chance to nab a future franchise quarterback and might not wait around to see about Jimmy G.'s future.

“I’m sure Jimmy was a little pissed off from it just like I would be, too,” Shanahan said. “But me knowing Jimmy, he’ll be fired up and come in and he’ll work his butt off."
