Gerard Gallant Tabbed To Lead New York Rangers

Just over a month after firing David Quinn, the New York Rangers have settled on a new head coach. The New York Post reports that longtime NHL coach Gerard Gallant has agreed to terms with the Rangers to become their new head coach.

Over nearly nine seasons, Gallant has amassed a 270-216-4-51 record as head coach for the Blue Jackets, Panthers and Golden Knights. Gallant’s most recent NHL experience took place in Vegas where he coached the Golden Knights beginning with their inaugural 2017 season until he was fired in January of 2020.

The 57-year-old Gallant is best known for his initial season with Vegas, arguably the most impressive inaugural season for a franchise in NHL history. During that 2017-18 campaign the Golden Knights set the record for most wins by an expansion franchise and reached the Stanley Cup Finals, the first expansion team to do so. Following the season, Gallant received the Jack Adams Award, recognizing him as coach of the year.

Gallant becomes the 36th head coach in New York Rangers history. He inherits a Rangers team that finished fifth in the East Division and failed to qualify for the postseason. Before beginning his coaching career, Gallant spent almost 11 seasons as a player in the NHL.
