Urban Meyer Aiming To Make Jacksonville A 'Destination Spot'
After the Jacksonville Jaguars beat the Buffalo Bills 9-6 in a shocking upset on Sunday, Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer praised the fans and team owner Shad Khan and said that the team plays as hard as they can for the city of Jacksonville.
"We have a vision. We're building a brand-new facility. We want to make this a destination spot," Meyer said after the Week 9 victory. "Our owner wants to make Jacksonville one of the top cities in the United States of America. We already believe there are a lot of positives about Jacksonville, but a great football team really helps."
Jaguars kicker Matthew Wright kicked three field goals to score the 9 points, while the Jacksonville defense held the Bills to two field goals and 301 total yards. Buffalo entered the game as the NFL's highest-scoring offense, but Jacksonville left the matchup with its second win in 23 games.
"I know Buffalo travels very well," Meyer said. "There are a lot of reasons our guys play so hard, and No. 1 is the city of Jacksonville — and then also our owner . To see that locker room, to see our stadium … I really appreciate our fans. I pulled the headset off a couple of times on third down. They were great. Our fans were great."
In March, Meyer mentioned one of his goals was to make Jacksonville a year-round destination for players.
News4Jax reported that the new head coach said he sees potential in the city to be a year-round destination spot for players and their families.
While Meyer didn’t offer specifics about his game plan then, he did hint at a new practice, strength and conditioning, and training venue, the news station reported.
“Well, we call it the culture of excellence. We expect everything to be the best of the best. And right now, it’s not here at Jacksonville," Meyer said in March. "There’s a lot of great things that are. There are certain areas that are not. So, my job and my push really hard … especially when you’re talking about health and safety of players, I expect it to be the very best."
Meyer continued: "So, we’re pushing hard and our owner, Shad , has been fantastic to listen and learn about the way we expect, and he expects the best of the best. So, we’re right in the middle of that conversation.”
