Tua Not Named Captain For Dolphins

The Dolphins' confidence in Tua Tagovailoa remains a mystery.

When the Dolphins coaching staff announced the team captains on Wednesday, they excluded the QB from their selections. Reported by Yahoo Sports, offensive tackle Jesse Davis and receiver Mack Hollins were named the offensive captains, while safety Jason McCourty and linebacker Elandon Roberts were nominated on the defensive side. Special teams player Clayton Fejedelm was also named to the group.

Tua's rising stock in Miami led fans to believe that he could earn a team captain spot, likely over surprise pick Hollins, but the coaching staff had other ideas.

As reported by OutKick's Armando Salguero, Miami's refusal to douse the heated trade talks for Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson heavily implies that Miami isn't ready to risk it all with Tua as the starter. When pressed by the media over the trade talks, head coach Brian Flores provided calculated answers regarding the team's support for Tua over Watson — keeping the door open for Deshaun, and temporarily pledging dedication to Tua.

Not earning a slot as captain certainly raises the stakes for Tua Tagovailoa in the approaching season. The Alabama product starred in nine games in 2020, finishing the year with 14 total touchdowns, five interceptions and a QBR of 52.5 (26th among active NFL quarterbacks).
