Trey Lance Is Officially Named The 49ers Starter For Week 5's Matchup Against Undefeated Cardinals

The moment that San Francisco fans have been waiting for: Trey Lance has officially been named the starting quarterback for the 49ers.

On Friday, the team and head coach Kyle Shanahan made the announcement following a string of absences in practice from previous starter Jimmy Garoppolo.

As reported by OutKick's Armando Salguero, Garoppolo had been nursing a calf injury all week and was questionable to join the team for Friday's practice. Garoppolo was unable to go, slating Lance to take first-team reps yet again, with Nate Sudfeld as the team's backup option behind the rookie.

Lance has seen brief stints of action in the first four weeks of the regular season. In Week 4's matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, the rookie filled in after Garoppolo sustained the calf injury — completing 8-of-16 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns. Week 5's assignment will pit Lance against another NFC West team in the unbeaten Arizona Cardinals (4-0).

Boasting a solid defensive line led by Chandler Jones, the Cardinals hope to continue the bad streak of luck for rookie quarterbacks selected in this year's draft, but Lance is determined to make the intradivision meetup an opportunity to splash as the fan base, and the NFL, keenly watches his debut.
