Trevor Lawrence Not Named The Starting QB In Jacksonville Yet; When Will It Happen?

Many expect first overall pick Trevor Lawrence to be the Jacksonville Jaguars opening day quarterback, but coach Urban Meyer isn't putting a timeline on the young QB's development.

“He’s not ready yet, but he doesn’t have to be ready yet,” Meyer said in a USA Today interview.

“We got a long training camp coming up. He’s probably advanced maybe a little quicker than we would’ve thought, which was a positive.”

The first pick in the draft will have to outplay a couple other QB's on the roster, including Gardner Minshew II, C.J. Beathard, and Jake Luton.

Lawrence was limited throughout minicamp as he recovers from shoulder surgery which he had in the spring.

The quarterback has been working hard, and that's not been lost on coach Meyer as training camp closes in for the Jaguars at the end of July.

“One thing that we worked on — when we made a decision that Trevor was going to be our No. 1 pick, we went from the evaluation stage to the preparation stage,” Meyer said.

“And that means that I want to see — I can’t remember the exact date, but we started installing the playbook with him well before the draft. So you can see the retention, he’s got a really good work ethic and he’s progressed very well.”

It still wouldn't be a surprise to see Minshew be the opening day starter when the Jaguars open up at Houston against the Texans on September 12th.

Likely Lawrence will be the second-string to start the season, and then eventually once Minshew starts to struggle (which he will) the rookie will get his chance.
