Trent Dilfer's Comments On Daniel Jones That Will Certainly Land On 'Freezing Cold Takes' Soon Enough

Former Jets head coach Rex Ryan is apparently done with Daniel Jones after his dismal Week 1 showing.

"I gotta admit, my guy still can't protect the football. So I'm done with you, Daniel Jones. Just like I was done with Mark Sanchez at some point," Ryan said on ESPN's Get Up! earlier this week.

However, Trent Dilfer isn't giving up and now he's saying Daniel Jones will grow into a great player. He really said that.

"I see the toughness, the grit, the resilience, enough talent. The intangible stuff to allow him to survive what's going on to be a horrific narrative of giving games away," Dilfer said on WFAN. "He's going to have to get though this turnover thing. And he will, because I think he's the right kind of kid."

"And when he does -- I don't think it's an if, I think it's a when -- and as (the Giants) get more talented upfront, I think he's going to be one of the better players in the NFL. I don't think he's going to be a flash and sizzle player all the time. I think he's going to grow into one of these great quarterbacks who makes everyone around him better because of what he's gone through, what he's endured, what he's had to fight through."

So according to Dilfer, Daniel Jones needs the team around him to get much better while simultaneously stating he'll be great down the road because of his ability to make other players better. So if the team wins whatsoever with Jones under center, it'll be Jones' doing for putting players in position to win. Sounds like Dilfer's hedging his bet to blame the Giants' failure on the rest of the team, rather than Jones.

And what Dilfer is failing to realize is that the "Daniel Jones has endured the worst of it, so he'll be stronger later" hypothesis is non-sensical. This is like watching Cam Newton throw the football inaccurately for a decade and then believing he'll turn into a Drew Brees because of his intangibles.

Intangibles don't turn poorly performing football players into great players. Those wildcard personality traits that Brady and Mahomes have turns really good prospects into complete players. Daniel Jones isn't even a good player right now who's letting us down with Jameis Winston-like turnovers in the red zone. Jones puts the ball on the ground more than any player in recent memory and it's a god awful watch, which is why Dilfer's prediction will ultimately be a laugher. Nothing Jones does in the present indicates that he'll be a great player some day. It's just a guessing game at this point.

Daniel Jones has fumbled 30 times (18 lost) in just 28 career games, and that doesn't even include other turnovers, like his 22 interceptions. No player in the NFL gives the football away 40 times in less than 30 games and still projects to be a great player. Is it possible Jones comes out of nowhere and turns a decent career out of this? Sure, but to make a prediction that he will is nothing more than an effort to seem like a genius next year. He's trying too hard on this one.
