TNF Recap: Rodgers, Douglas Dethrone Undefeated Cardinals, Packers Leave AZ With Statement Win, 24-21
The 6-1 Green Bay Packers visited the undefeated Arizona Cardinals (7-0) for Week 8's Thursday Night Football matchup.
Expectations for the Packers offense had been tempered with Aaron Rodgers missing three of his lead wideouts in Davante Adams, Allen Lazard and Marquez Valdes-Scantling.
The reigning MVP still mustered enough offense to defeat Kyler Murray's Cardinals, 24-21. Rodgers completed 22 of 37 passes and finished the game with 184 yards, two touchdowns and no turnovers.
Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray had all of his weapons for the night and failed to register a touchdown — finishing the game with 22 of 33 passes completed, 274 passing yards and two interceptions. Arizona's backfield combined for three touchdowns and a mere 52 yards rushing from leads Chase Edmonds and James Conner.
In the final five minutes of the fourth quarter, the Packers were in good position to go up by two possessions, leading 24-21, and practically put the game away until an Aaron Jones touchdown run was called back upon further review. The Packers tried punching the ball in from the goal line and were ultimately blocked by the stout Cardinals D-line and linebacker Devon Kennard — forcing the Packers to turn the ball over on downs.
Arizona got the ball back and marched 90 yards down the field; on the steps of a potential game-tying field goal or go-ahead touchdown. However, Packers cornerback Rasul Douglas had a different plan.
With 14 seconds left and less than five yards away from a score to take the lead, the Cardinals went for the TD and Douglas picked Murray off in the end zone. Murray’s intended target, veteran receiver AJ Green, failed to look back and allowed Douglas to cut off the pass.
Prior to the interception, Murray had a noticeable limp walking up to the huddle after getting knocked down on the penultimate play. OutKick's ProFootballDoc assessed the injury as a left ankle eversion sprain.
The Cardinals lose their undefeated season (7-1) while the Packers climb their way up the NFC Ranks (7-1) with TNF's statement win.
