Texans Call Up Jeff Driskel, Continue To Pay Deshaun Watson Not To Play

The Houston Texans have filled the roster with another quarterback, though it's not Deshaun Watson.

Actually, Watson remains on the roster, collecting about $600,000 a week not to play. But part of that is on the Texans themselves.

At any rate, the new QB is none other than journeyman Jeff Driskel, who has been called up from the practice squad to back up rookie starter Davis Mills. Of course, Mills is the former backup to Tyrod Taylor, who is out 3-4 weeks with a hamstring injury.

So, let's recap: Mills will start Thursday night vs. the Carolina Panthers. Driskel will be the second option. Taylor is out. Watson is out. The bizarre situation marches on.

First came the news that Wilson was demanding a trade. Then came the 20-plus sexual assault allegations against him. Neither the Texans nor NFL have made any sort of move to address the situation, though the Texans have benched him. They haven't traded him, but they are still paying him.

That could last the entire season.

Meanwhile, Driskel is a former sixth-round pick and career reserve. He has actually started nine games in three seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions and Denver Broncos. But he's just 1-8 as a starter, so the Texans (1-1) are likely glad he's coming off the bench.
