Teddy Bridgewater Has High Praise For RB Javonte Williams

Second-round running back Javonte Williams is impressing the right people in Mile High. On that list is newly-named starting quarterback, Teddy Bridgewater.

Bridgewater spoke with the media in Denver to talk up his teammate, comparing the rookie to veteran Saints runner Alvin Kamara.

“I get asked about Javonte often and I told someone—I don’t want to make it seem like I’m reaching or anything—but he possesses some of those qualities that you see in Alvin Kamara," said Bridgewater, a former teammate of Kamara's. "He’s a guy extremely smart, he catches the ball well out of the backfield, he runs good routes, he has a low center of gravity, he’s strong, he knows how to set up blocks. You see that in a guy like him who’s only a rookie, his ceiling is so high.”

While the comparison doesn't hold much water in terms of running styles, Bridgewater surely intended to encourage his new running back by emphasizing the high ceiling others have already seen during the offseason.

Williams was a power back during his time at North Carolina, though his performances were not lauded for elusive cuts and craftiness, but for his ability to shoot through a gap and bounce off corners in the second gear. Like a bulked-up version of Buffalo's Devin Singletary.

The team surely sees Williams as a valuable addition to the backfield now that they have released former third-round running back Royce Freeman. With Melvin Gordon expected to lead a 1-2 punch alongside Williams, the rookie's role may serve as more of a handcuff but carries plenty of (fantasy) potential if Gordon is pestered by injury.

The 2020 Broncos' 13th-ranked rushing attack was contingent on a stellar offensive line, which will be a factor to watch in the upcoming season.
