Steelers Announce Dwayne Haskins As Starter At QB In Friday's Preseason Game

Coach Mike Tomlin has officially named former Washington Football Team first-round pick quarterback Dwayne Haskins the preseason starter for the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday.

The Wednesday announcement puts Haskins in position to win the team's backup job. Mason Rudolph was the the backup in 2020, but Haskins has been impressive thus far in training camp.

"Excited about giving him an opportunity to see some reps against Carolina's first group," Tomlin said.

This preseason, Haskins has been impressive for the most part, playing 88 offensive snaps. He hit 28 of 42 passing for a completion of 66.7%. In all, Haskins has passed for 271 yards and has thrown one touchdown with no interceptions.

Against the Eagles, Haskins completed 16 of 22 attempts for 161 yards and a touchdown and led three more scoring drives.

Last season in his final game as a member of Washington, he took on the same Panthers team he'll go up against this weekend. Haskins struggled in that game, which the Panthers won 20-13. He went just 14 of 28 attempts for 154 yards with two interceptions.

Washington didn't waste any time moving away from Haskins, as he was released from the team the following day.

As far as the Steelers go, they did play normal starter Ben Roethlisberger last week in a 26-20 win over the Detroit Lions. Neither Roethlisberger nor Rudolph will play in the game this Friday.
