SNF Recap: Pittsburgh Holds On For Overtime Win Against Seattle Seahawks
The Week 6 Sunday Night Football contest between the Seahawks and the Steelers may not have played out like the marquee matchup of old, but it was still a thrilling overtime win by Pittsburgh.
The evening at Heinz Field started with a ceremony dedicated to Steelers great, Troy Polamalu. The legendary Polamalu and his Hall of Fame bust made an appearance before the crowds.
Seattle arrived to Heinz with starters Russell Wilson and Chris Carson on injured reserve. Geno Smith remained the interim quarterback and kept the offense humming in the first two quarters, though his team headed into halftime with a 14-0 deficit.
Seattle ultimately climbed out of the hole, scoring 14 points in the third to set up a 17-14 score heading into the fourth quarter, when Big Ben had a game-changing fumble that made things interesting. Ben pumped the ball but lost grip on it. After further review, the play was deemed a fumble, and Seattle took over in Steeler territory.
Down 20-17, Geno Smith guided his team down the field for a 43-yard kick from Jason Myers. Prior to the kick, Seattle nearly ran out of time when a sideline catch by DK Metcalf was fumbled. Seattle's Freddie Swain recovered the fumble and hurried the ball back to the line of scrimmage with three seconds left. Geno spiked the ball and Seattle's kicker knocked the field goal as time expired, sending the game to overtime at 20-20.
Seattle's first drive of overtime appeared to have the requisite momentum to march into field goal territory, until it was cut short by Pittsburgh's TJ Watt. Watt sacked Geno Smith on 3rd and 4, sending Seattle back to their side of the field, forcing them to punt. However, Watt wasn't finished.
On the ensuing Seattle drive, following a punt from the Steelers offense, Watt strip sacked Smith as the QB scrambled up the pocket. The defensive standout sealed the game by recovering in Seattle territory, setting up Chris Boswell for a 37-yard field goal. Boswell knocked it through for the 23-20 win.
Former Tennessee Vols defensive end Darrell Taylor was at the center of a frightening scene when he suffered what appeared to be a neck injury in the fourth quarter. Taylor was immobilized and carted off the field.
Smith ended the night completing 23-of-32 passes, throwing for 209 yards and two touchdowns. Fill-in running back Alex Collins rushed for 101 yards on 20 carries.
Roethlisberger completed 29-of-40 passes for 229 yards and one score. Steelers running back Najee Harris ended with 81 yards on 24 carries.
The Steelers head into their bye week at .500 (3-3), while the Seattle Seahawks drop to 2-4.
