SNF Recap: Bills Best Mahomes, Chiefs In AFC Title Game Rematch
The Bills came into Arrowhead Stadium to face off against the same Patrick Mahomes-led Kansas City Chiefs team that had previously bested them in the AFC title game last season. Aside from a slight weather delay during halftime, the Bills were unstoppable in asserting themselves as the new top dog in the AFC.
The Chiefs secondary couldn't prevent big plays between Buffalo's Josh Allen and his spectrum of receivers, and Mahomes had no magic or accuracy, resulting in a 38-20 blowout.
Mahomes had a sub-par performance in the primetime spotlight: recording a 70.9 QB rating off a 61 percent completion rate (33 of 54), two touchdowns and two interceptions. Top Kansas City receiver Tyreek Hill was no better for the night after a horrible drop off a 5-yard pass attempt by Mahomes lead to a pick-six.
Mahomes' deficiencies were partnered with a number of key injuries to other role players in Andy Reid's offense that will surely hinder the Chiefs, should they miss an extended period of time. Running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire left the contest early with an apparent knee injury, while tight end Travis Kelce was knocked out late in the contest after a hit from Buffalo's Micah Hyde.
As for Josh Allen, his night was short and stellar: he threw for 315 yards and three touchdowns off 15-of-26 passing. He also led the night in rushing with 57 yards off 11 carries, with Zack Moss trailing in yardage (37) off the same number of carries.
Bills tight end Dawson Knox and his QB had a better rendition of the lauded Mahomes-Kelce connection. Knox caught three passes for 117 yards and a touchdown, largely off a 58-yard scoring reception in the second quarter that put the Bills up 24-10 in the second quarter. No. 2 receiver Emmanuel Sanders also had an efficient night with three catches, two scores and 54 yards.
The Chiefs fall to a losing record, 2-3, while the Bills improve to 4-1.
