Saints Slop Way Past Seahawks To Stay In Division Hunt

Probably the most exciting thing about the New Orleans Saints' 13-10 win over the Seattle Seahawks on Monday night was the Manning brothers broadcast, during which Peyton briefly sported Eli's New York Giants jersey.

Other than that, this was the very picture of drab. Little offense, lots of rain, a few missed field goals and two teams that seem to be the very definition of average.

Then again, the Saints are 4-2 in their first season minus Drew Brees and with Jameis Winston now under center.

Meanwhile, the Seahawks are 2-5 in a season that has not involved Russell Wilson (finger injury) nearly enough. Instead, they have Geno Smith at quarterback, and that hasn't worked out well for anybody -- except, perhaps, the opposition.

Yes, this was a matchup of Winston (not bad) vs. Smith (not often good). Winston's team won, and while the Saints may not be a real NFC East threat, they are currently in the mix.

The best the Seahawks can hope for at this point is to somehow get there while they wait for Wilson to return. But they may need to try to sign someone decent in need of a team to make even that happen. (Cam Newton, anyone?)

As for the Saints, thankfully, they also have running back Alvin Kamara and a fairly decent defense. Kamara was his usual underrated self, finishing with just 51 yards rushing -- but with a team-high 128 yards receiving, including a touchdown.

Winston finished 19-of-35 passing for 222 yards and a touchdown. Smith, meanwhile, went 12-of-22 for 167 yards, also tossing a TD. Fittingly, he was sacked twice at the end to enable New Orleans to seal the deal.

At any rate, as good as the Saints have been, the real test comes in their next game, when they play host to Tom Brady and the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Until then, we can just take delight in Eli, Peyton, their father, Archie, a former Saints star, and the wrong son in a Giants jersey. After all, nothing else about this game really opened any eyes or was worthy of prolonged discussion.
