Saints Hand Starting Gig To Jameis Winston

In what would surprise only those who lack eyeballs, the New Orleans Saints have named Drew Brees' successor. After thoroughly outplaying challenger Taysom Hill, former first overall pick Jameis Winston will start the season as New Orleans' top signal caller.

Winston, who enters his second season with the Saints after five in Tampa Bay, will make his first start with New Orleans when the Saints host the Packers on opening day.

Last year, when filling in for an injured Drew Brees, Hill went 3-1 as a starter, leading many to believe he had a leg up in the quarterback competition. But an up and down preseason coupled with Winston's success has Hill again slated for backup duties.

Head coach Sean Payton's decision was likely made easier by Winston's Monday night masterpiece. In the team's second preseason game, Winston abused the Jacksonville defense to the tune of 123 passing yards on just 10 attempts, two touchdowns and only one incompletion.

Having been handed the reins of the offense, Winston would be wise to remind his Saints teammates to take the field with an empty stomach, leaving plenty of room to eat some Ws.

FanDuel Sportsbook currently lists New Orleans as 3-point home underdogs for Winston's first start as a Saint.
