Rams Coach Sean McVay On Stafford's Debut: 'He's Gifted'

It didn't take long for Rams coach Sean McVay to get over his former crush, quarterback Jared Goff. Following Sunday evening's 34-14 win over Chicago, McVay gushed about the new gunslinger in his life: off-season acquisition Matthew Stafford. The LA coach wasted little time heaping praise on Stafford. McVay even complimented Stafford's ability "to flip his hips," an indication that the coach-quarterback relationship is still in the honeymoon phase.

Speaking with reporters post-game, McVay applauded Stafford's Rams debut: "He expected to play well, and he did a great job. It's hard to say there was one thing. I loved everything he did tonight."

An opening drive 67-yard touchdown pass to receiver Van Jefferson had McVay fawning over the 33-year old quarterback's talents.

“It was great job by him being able to flip his hips and make an unbelievable throw,” said McVay. “I think that’s kind of one of those things. He’s gifted, he’s got a great ability to be able to change his arm slot and make all types of throws, whether it be short, intermediate or down the field, but he’s — you’re not limited in anything you can do with him in the pass game.”

Stafford finished the game completing 20 of 26 passes for 321 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions.

"You could just see there was a look in his eye. He had confidence in his teammates," said McVay.

Stafford appears equally impressed with his new coach, telling NBC: “(McVay) did a great job calling the game. I mean, shoot, we had some guys wide open for some huge plays. Our guys made great plays on the outside. We’re constantly talking to each other, trying to see where each other’s at. I’ve got great trust in him, and I think he’s got a lot of trust in me to go out there and execute what comes to mind to him."

The LA love fest heads to Indy next week for a matchup with the Carson Wentz and the 0-1 Colts.
