Pete Carroll Wants DK Metcalf to Dial Down the Competitiveness

It's been a slow start to the 2021 season for Seahawks receiver DK Metcalf, and now head coach Pete Carroll has called him out.

Metcalf registered three penalties on Sunday after committing two during Week 1. Carroll told the media on Monday that Metcalf needs to tone down his antics during games and remain more focused.

“I think (he) was trying really hard early and it was happening in both games where he’s really trying to set the tempo and try to find the competitive makeup of the game. He needs to calm down a little bit. He was trying a little too hard,” Carroll said. “But he was just really working hard, I mean really working hard and I mean, sometimes, you know, it goes too far. He had two holds on the perimeter screens and those are important plays to us. He was really mauling the guy who was blocking and just went too far.”

Metcalf has not really been himself during the field of play. Metcalf has hauled in just 10-of-16 targets for 113 yards and one score. Not exactly the start many were expecting from the third-year wideout.

Fellow wideout Tyler Lockett has maintained his status as WR1 and has been one of the most productive receivers in the NFL during the first two weeks. Lockett is second in the league with 278 yards and is tied for the league lead with three touchdowns.

Seattle without a doubt needs Metcalf to pick up his play and refrain from committing errors that negatively impact the team. It has bit the team early on and could be dooming in a competitive NFC West.

Seattle is the only team that's not 2-0 thus far in the division and will look to keep pace starting this Sunday at 4:25 against the Vikings (0-2).
