Packers Re-Sign TE Tonyan, Create Salary Cap Space To Help Out QB Rodgers

The Green Bay Packers were busy Thursday, making roster space so that the franchise can bring back all-time legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

One move that will help make that happen was the re-signing 27-year-old tight end Robert Tonyan, which creates salary cap space for the franchise.

ESPN's Field Yates first reported the Packers roster move and the bringing back of Tonyan, who last season was a threat in the passing game, catching 52 passes for 586 yards and a career-high 11 touchdowns.

The 11 scores ties Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce for the most receiving touchdowns amongst tight ends last year.










Green Bay converted $2.349 million of Tonyan's $3.384 million deal (which was the second-round tender the team placed on him in March) into a bonus, which was prorated over four years.

The deal for the tight end winds up giving them $1,879,200 in available salary cap space. They had $6,656,999 in available salary cap space entering the day.

Tonyan has made strides the first three seasons he's been in the league, going from six catches his first year to 10 for 100 yards in 2019, and then last year broke out with the big season of 52 grabs for 586 yards and the 11 scores.
