Nick Sirianni On Naming Starting QB: 'There's No Rush'

Competition makes guys better. In most facets of life, that's a true statement, and it's certainly true for quarterbacks. At the pee wee, middle school, high school, college and NFL levels, having at least two guys push each other makes everyone better.

Maybe that's the angle Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni is taking by not naming a starting quarterback yet. Or maybe he just doesn't believe in one particular guy enough to label him at this point in the preseason.

Either way, most have assumed that Jalen Hurts will be the team's starter. He was a second-round pick in 2020, and he started a handful of games as a rookie. The results were mixed, but many felt like he was good enough to earn the opportunity.

And sure, that could still happen, but Sirianni recently said that "there's no rush" to name a starter. "We're just not there yet," he told reporters on Thursday, via NFL.com. League veteran QB Joe Flacco, who recently signed with the team, is probably relieved to hear that.

Considering the rumors that Philadelphia is also interested in Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, this answer from Sirianni is only going to create more speculation, even if the first-year head coach isn't willing to go there when asked about it.

"I'm not going to talk about the hypotheticals with rumors," he said. "All I can tell you is that every decision that we make here is a group effort. How and his staff and myself, we're working together to get the best 53 out on the field every Sunday."

If Watson joins Philadelphia, he'd be their best option -- as long as he's available. The problem right now is his legal issues, and things certainly haven't been looking good for the former first-rounder. We'll have to see what happens.
