NFL Calls Off Supplemental Draft Once Again

For the second straight year, the NFL has canceled its supplemental draft, and you have to wonder if it will ever return.

Per Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the collective bargaining agreement stipulates that it’s up to the league to determine whether a supplemental draft will be held.

The supplemental draft was set up to give college players with eligibility issues who weren't in the regular draft a chance to make the leap to the NFL. It is typically held the second week of July and has produced 46 players since its inception in 1977. The list of supplemental draftees includes Cris Carter, Bernie Kosar and Josh Gordon.

"Last year, concerns about a flood of applications due to the 2020 college football season being in doubt," led the outright cancelation of the supplemental draft, per Logan Ulrich of NFL Trade Rumors.

The most recent supplemental draft was held July 10, 2019, when the Arizona Cardinals landed safety Jalen Thompson.
