New York Giants Hire Buffalo Bills OC Brian Daboll As Head Coach
The New York Giants have a new head coach after announcing their hiring of former Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll on Friday.
Daboll, 46, was marketed as a top pick amid the NFL's head coaching carousel.
He is also a five-time Super Bowl champion as part of New England's coaching staff.
Pumping Daboll's stock in the head-coaching free agency was his offense's 36-point performance in the AFC Divisional Round, almost edging out the Kansas City Chiefs in the overtime loss (42-36).
Giants fans have anticipated the hiring of Daboll following a two-season stint with former head coach Joe Judge that produced some of the worst offensive performances in recent memory for the G-Men.
Co-owner John Mara candidly spoke out on the organization's failure to foster a proper offense for third-year starting quarterback Daniel Jones, and emphasized the team's wishlist for a new Giants head coach to correct the QB's development.
Daboll released a statement on his new role, highlighting the team's expectations to return to winning football.
"My immediate goal is to assemble a coaching staff — a strong staff that emphasizes teaching and collaboration and making sure our players are put in the position to be their best and, ultimately, to win games," Daboll said. "That's why all of us do this. To teach, to be successful, to develop talent, and to win. I have a pretty good idea where our fan base's feelings are right now, and I get it."
The Mara-Tisch ownership families called for a clean slate after the team's 4-13 regular season. General manager Dave Gettleman retired and Judge was canned as the plan ideated by the former special teams coordinator failed to show up on Sundays.
In a refreshing move for the organization, the Giants decided to go with an analytics guy by hiring Bills front office assistant Joe Schoen as their new GM.
Schoen commented on Daboll's hiring:
"Over the last four years, I have observed first-hand Brian's strengths as a leader -- he is an excellent communicator, intelligent, innovative, and hard-working," Schoen announced. "Brian's genuine and engaging personality is refreshing. He fosters relationships with the players and coaches around him. He is progressive in his vision and values collaboration, two of the attributes we think are essential. I am thrilled to partner with Brian and welcome he and his family to this side of the state."
One pick from the Bills personnel snowballed into the next now that Daboll and Schoen are tasked with reviving a franchise that has compiled five consecutive losing seasons of six wins or less.
The only other name heavily vetted by the New York Giants was former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores. Flores' hiring was reportedly contingent on his plan for OC but the plan didn't beat Daboll's pitch.
Daboll's work with Josh Allen helped build a top-tier offense for the Bills these past two seasons: averaging 31.3 PPG in 2020-21 and 28.4 PPG in 2021-22.
