Mason Rudolph Wants To Start For Steelers In 2022
Mason Rudolph says his goal is to be the Steelers' starter in 2022.
"That's my goal, to be a starting quarterback in this league, and for my team," Rudolph said, per ESPN's Brooke Pryor.
The Steelers recently signed Rudolph to a one-year extension through 2022 worth $5 million, which includes up to $4 million in additional incentives related to playing time, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported in April.
With veteran quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's future beyond 2021 certainly in doubt, the Steelers will have a familiar face in the 2022 QB room with starting experience.
The former Oklahoma State quarterback could be in the running to take over for Big Ben, but he could also be an insurance policy for the team.
Rudolph hasn’t necessarily looked like a franchise quarterback during his starts so far, but he does have the advantage of being the only Pittsburgh signal-caller under contract for 2022, as of right now.
The Steelers' third-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft has started nine games over two seasons in place of an injured Ben Roethlisberger, but was ineffective and benched a few times in favor of UDFA Devlin Hodges.
This season, the Steelers list Big Ben and Rudolph on the roster, along with former Tennessee QB Joshua Dobbs and former Ohio State QB Dwayne Haskins.
