Los Angeles Rams Set To Play Super Bowl LVI At Home After Comeback Win, 20-17, Against San Francisco 49ers
Sean McVay's Los Angeles Rams are headed to their second Super Bowl since moving out of St. Louis in 2016.
Breaking a six-game losing streak against the San Francisco 49ers, the Rams bested their intradivisional rival, 20-17, in large part to general manager Les Snead's blockbuster trade to acquire Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford in the offseason.
Breaking away from past seasons of tepid quarterbacking, LA's coaching staff allowed the Stafford-led offense to spearhead their winning strategy, and they were successful, albeit several quarters late.
San Francisco held the advantage on both sides of the ball in the first half — scoring on a 44-yard screen pass to wideout Deebo Samuel, Robbie Gould field goal and a 16-yard touchdown to George Kittle in the third.
The game's momentum favored the 49ers for the majority of the contest, relying on lead receiver Deebo Samuel and keeping quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo off his back.
Leaning off their winning game plan to let Samuel eat up yardage and time off the clock, San Francisco was outscored 13-0 in the fourth quarter. Samuel finished the game with 98 yards on 11 touches.
At the start of the fourth quarter, Los Angeles was down 17-3 but saw their long-awaited spark on offense come from the year's most reliable wideout in Cooper Kupp.
Snead's mid-season acquisition of former Browns wideout Odell Beckham, Jr. also paid off for the Rams on Sunday. Kupp and Beckham combined for 20 catches and 255 yards, adding two receiving touchdowns by Kupp.
Despite losing starting tight end Tyler Higbee in the first quarter, Stafford found a way to get McVay's efficient passing attack in sync with his receiving corps.
Stafford threw for 337 yards, two touchdowns and an interception on 31-of-45 passing.
Garoppolo's efforts, and potentially his tenure in San Francisco, came to a bitter end when the QB was picked off by Rams linebacker Travin Howard on the Niners' final drive after getting rushed by the effective Rams defensive line.
Niners safety Jaquiski Tartt had an opportunity to pick off Stafford in the fourth but dropped an easy interception; embodying the Niners' waning focus in the championship game.
Jimmy Garoppolo completed 16-of-30 for 232 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
Los Angeles engineered the largest fourth-quarter comeback in an NFC Championship Game, marking the third time offensive guru and Niners coach Kyle Shanahan has eased his foot off the gas to permit a major comeback.
The Rams welcome the Cincinnati Bengals to SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif. on Feb. 13 for Super Bowl 56.
Los Angeles opened as a 3.5-point favorite over Cincy, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
