Kyle Shanahan: 'Nothing's Changed' Regarding 49ers QB Situation

According to 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, there is no quarterback controversy on his struggling San Francisco squad (2-3) in the loaded NFC West. Shanahan did not mince words: Jimmy Garoppolo is the starter once he fully recovers from a calf injury that sidelined him over the weekend against the undefeated Cardinals.

"No, nothing's changed," Shanahan said postgame. "That was just one game. It was a tough loss right there, and I'm going to talk to our whole team tomorrow and think about how we can get our whole team better coming back from the bye."

The upcoming time off should help Garoppolo heal before the team’s Week 7 game against Indianapolis on Oct. 24 for Sunday Night Football. Shanahan sounded optimistic about his veteran QB returning, but made sure to tread lightly as well.

"The fact that he had a chance this week, that gives me a lot of hope coming back ," Shanahan said. "I think any time you're dealing with calves and stuff like that, you never know how they're going to react.

"I think that was similar to with Kittle. I thought he was going to be alright a couple of weeks ago, and now we're going on IR. So, I don't want to speak too soon, but hopefully."

The 49ers lost 17-10 to the Arizona Cardinals (5-0) on Sunday. Backup 49ers quarterback Trey Lance threw for 192 yards on 15 for 29 attempts, no touchdowns and one interception in the low-scoring affair.
