Kyle Shanahan: Not Sure On Jimmy Garoppolo's Future With 49ers
Despite quarterbacking the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl two years ago and the NFC title game this year, Jimmy Garoppolo's future with the team is very much in doubt.
And coach Kyle Shanahan didn't exactly give Jimmy G a ringing endorsement.
"If we knew exactly what was happening, we’d have told Jimmy,” Shanahan told reporters.
The 49ers have rookie Trey Lance waiting in the wings. Lance will be a second-year player next season and presumably more ready to take starting snaps. For all the team's accomplishments, Garoppolo has been injury-prone and mostly just so-so, or barely above so-so.
So there are definitely some trade possibilities. After all, the 49ers aren't about to keep Garoppolo to have him serve as Lance's backup. Not when they can fill other needs, ideally, via a Garoppolo trade.
"There’s a lot of good options there. A lot of cards are on the table,” Shanahan admitted.
But yes, there's a chance Garoppolo returns for another run. Regardless of what you think of his individual performance, the 49ers have been a regular contender with him behind center.
"In the two years that he’s played, he’s taken us to the Super Bowl and the NFC Championship Game,” Shanahan said.
Still, San Francisco selected Lance with the No. 3 overall pick in 2021 for a reason. And it's because they are just about ready to move on from Garoppolo. The only questions that really remain are when and where.
