Jared Goff To Remain Lions' Starter Despite Poor Performance Against Steelers

Any scuttlebutt about Lions head coach Dan Campbell benching quarterback Jared Goff is just that. Scuttlebutt.

Campbell reiterated on Monday that Goff isn't going anywhere, even as the Lions sit at 0-8-1.

"Ultimately," Campbell said, "I still think right now he's the guy that gives us the best chance."

Goff has hit rock bottom in his NFL career. With the 16-16 tie against the Steelers on Sunday, Goff is now 0-15-1 in his career without McVay as his head coach. In 70 minutes of play, Goff could muster only 114 yards on 14-of-25 passing. In the first quarter alone, Goff had -1 passing yards.

Goff is completing 66.1 percent of his passes for 2,107 yards with eight touchdowns and six interceptions. In the last five games, he has just one touchdown, and the Lions have sunk to 29th in the NFL in scoring offense.

He seemed to be favoring his side at one point during the game on Sunday and was evaluated on the sideline by the medical staff. Goff underwent further testing on Monday, but Campbell said he never thought about yanking him from the game.

"If I felt like there was no way that he could function, then I would (have taken him out)," Campbell said. "But I didn’t feel that way yesterday."

Backup David Blough is the next option, and he has some experience. Blough made five starts in 2019 when then quarterback Matthew Stafford was out with an injury. He'll be ready, but Goff will remain the guy for now.

"It’s hard to say that he shouldn’t be the guy right now," Campbell said. "It’s hard to say that, man. Because, ah man, there again, every time we tried to throw it in dropback just about, our protection breaks down.

"And so, until we can do things right around him. Now, yeah, there’s throws we want to see that he needs to make. There was a dart that we threw to (Kalif Raymond) that he should make and he’s pissed off about it, too."
