Driver That Killed Jets Coach Greg Knapp Will Not Be Charged

The driver who struck New York Jets coach Greg Knapp with their car will not be charged in Knapp's death, the New York Post reports.

Knapp was struck by a motorist while riding his bike near his home in Danville, California, in July and San Ramon Police Department said Knapp sustained “major injuries” in the accident at the time.

The Post reports that the local district attorney's office decided not to pursue criminal charges due to a lack of evidence.

“The Office of the District Attorney has determined that there is insufficient evidence to satisfy the requisite standard of criminal negligence on the part of the suspect driver,” the office said in a statement to The Post on Friday. “ dangers of distracted driving are well known. To truly promote road safety motorists need to be attentive drivers as well.”

The 58-year-old coach died five days after the accident, and police said they did not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor. The driver was said to have been cooperating with the authorities at the time it occurred.

The longtime NFL coach previously worked with the 49ers, Falcons, Raiders, Seahawks, Texans and Broncos, and was set to become the team’s passing game coordinator. The Jets named Matt Cavanaugh to replace him on the staff.
