Disappointing Carson Wentz Weighs In On Lackluster Indianapolis Colts
The only team forecasted to challenge the Tennessee Titans for the AFC South division title heading into the season were the new-look Indianapolis Colts.
Adding quarterback Carson Wentz, replacing the seasoned Philip Rivers, sparked hopes that the tandem of Wentz and former Eagles OC Frank Reich would elevate the offense. Five weeks in, the team is sitting third in the AFC South with a 1-4 record, and Wentz at the helm of blame for many fans.
Carson Wentz spoke on his team's deflated expectations after five weeks, and how Indy hopes to rebound with 12 games remaining.
"You cannot get overly concerned about a record," Wentz admitted, via Yahoo Sports. "Whether you’re 4-1, 1-4, it’s always just about the next week. In the NFL, anybody can beat anybody at any point in time, and you see that every single Sunday."
He added, "I think we have such strong leadership that guys will rally around and follow and we’ll say, 'Hey, that’s all behind us.'"
Wentz has picked up the pace since the Colts' first win of the season against the Miami Dolphins. In the Week 4 victory, Wentz completed 24-of-32 passes, throwing two touchdowns and no interceptions. Wentz tried to keep the Colts alive against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 5, but fell short in a 31-25 loss. Wentz threw for over 400 yards (25 of 35) and added two touchdowns.
The Indianapolis defense has equally deserved credit for the team's discouraging start: surrendering 25.6 points a game, while giving up 6.2 yards per play. Coming off an All-Pro campaign, defensive tackle DeForest Buckner has yet to earn a sack in five contests, adding to the ailing defense. As fans analyze the team for its deficiencies, linebacker Darius Leonard and second-year running back Jonathan Taylor have remained standouts.
This week the Colts hope to see a respite from their rough start against intradivision opponent, the Houston Texans. The victor will be slated for second place in the AFC South, behind the 3-2 Tennessee Titans.
