Dak Prescott Preparing To Play Sunday, But Not Yet ‘Full Go’
Less than two weeks after injuring his calf in a win over the Patriots, Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott returned to practice Wednesday. But Cowboys brass is not yet ready to declare him the starter for this weekend’s game against Minnesota.
Prescott was seen in a walking boot following the win over New England, and reports then surfaced that, had the team had a game last weekend instead of a bye, he likely wouldn't have been able to play in it.
But the team did have a bye, which gave Prescott extra time to heal. Has it been enough time? Well, that's the question.
“He’s preparing to play. But he’s got to cross the threshold to make sure he’s full go,” said Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy on Wednesday.
McCarthy is taking a cautious approach with the franchise quarterback, wanting to make sure he’s fully recovered so that the injury doesn't linger.
“We don’t want this to be a week-to-week decision, so until he clears that threshold, to try to minimize the risk is really what the decision will come down to,” McCarthy said. “The ability to improve each day and not have a setback, that’s really what we’re focused on.”
Though he returned to the practice field Wednesday, the caution tape hasn't been removed all the way. Prescott still has some limitations that need to be surpassed before he gets the nod on Sunday.
“We won’t make that determination on if he’s a full go until we get to that point,” added McCarthy. “So we’ve got to make sure we’re getting (backup QB) Cooper (Rush) ready, too.”
Through six games, Prescott’s completed 73.1% of his passes for 1,813 yards and 16 touchdowns for the 5-1 Cowboys.
According to receiver CeeDee Lamb, Dak appears ready to add to those numbers, telling Michael Gehlken: “He looks great. In and out of his drops. …To me, he looks perfectly fine.”
The Vikings play host to Dallas this weekend on Sunday Night Football.
