Cris Carter Thinks Dolphins Should Move On From Tua Tagovailoa

Many have debated whether Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is the answer in Miami, and former NFL receiver Cris Carter suggests that the Dolphins trade the second-year pro.

Carter appeared on NFL Network's Good Morning Football on Tuesday and said that Miami should be looking to flip Tagovailoa for one big name quarterback.

“I like Tua,” Carter said. “He’s a nice guy, but he can’t be my quarterback moving forward. I gotta be able to make the trade. I’ve got the picks, and I’m gonna get me a guy. you know the reason why? Because I can’t replace that whole offensive line, but if I trade for Deshaun Watson, I can have a bad offensive line, and he can get around with it.”

Tagovailoa hasn't been what the Dolphins expected when they drafted him with the 5th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. He was in and out as the starter last season alongside journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick, even though Miami went 6-3 in the games he started. Tagovailoa was set to take off this season, but a rib injury in Week 2 sent him to injury reserve.

He returned in Miami's 23-20 loss to Jacksonville in Week 6, playing one of his best games as a pro. Tagovailoa completed 33-of-47 passes for 329 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. However, he failed to make the big play when the team needed it, and the Dolphins fell to 1-5 on the season.

While it's possible Miami looks to move on from Tagovailoa if they continue to implode, a move for Watson looks unlikely. The Texans quarterback is as talented as anyone in the league, but his legal issues would be tough to navigate.

Watson requested a trade from Houston in the offseason but is under investigation for over 20 sexual assault claims. Until his legal issues are resolved, Watson will carry on as a healthy inactive for the rest of the season.
