Cowboys Exec: Mike McCarthy Will Remain Cowboys Coach Next Season

It's been a long season for the Dallas Cowboys, but don't blame coach Mike McCarthy. The Cowboys sure aren't.

"There will be absolutely no change with Coach Mike McCarthy," Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones told 105.3 The Fan in Dallas.

The Cowboys are just 4-9, following Sunday's win over the Cincinnati Bengals. They have won only two of their previous eight games. But McCarthy has had to deal with a lot of issues -- many of which were out of his control --in his first year with the team. Starting QB Dak Prescott suffered an early season-ending injury, and the defense has been inept all year.

Dallas trails the leaders of the NFC East, the Washington Football Team, by two games. With another loss, the Cowboys will be mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. It will be a rare miss for McCarthy, who coached the Green Bay Packers to a win in Super Bowl XLV. Jones and the Cowboys seem to think that type of success will follow McCarthy in Dallas.

"If you look at his track record and pedigree, he's consistently won year in and year out," Jone said. "We have the utmost confidence that this ship is going to be righted quickly. And Mike's going to be the leader of this group, and he's certainly a great head coach."

Jones continued, "I think we're going to see that going forward, that he's a great head coach in this league. He's accomplished a lot, and he's going to accomplish a lot more before it's all said and done."

While McCarthy's job is safe, other changes to the coaching staff could be on the way, per ESPN's Todd Archer. That makes sense, given the defensive issues.
