Contract Extension For Matthew Stafford Not Part Of Rams-Lions Trade

Matthew Stafford is heading to the Los Angeles Rams, but a re-worked contract won't be part of the deal.

As you may know by now, the Detroit Lions have traded Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams for Jared Goff in a swap of quarterbacks. Several draft picks are also involved, as relayed by OutKick's Clint Lamb.

But what isn't expected to happen is a restructured contract for Stafford, according to Ian Rapoport of ESPN. Instead, despite some speculation, Stafford's deal will remain the same. He is signed through 2022, with base salaries of $9.5 million and $12.5 million. Along with that, he has $10.5 million in "workout bonuses" each season.

"Given the price they paid to get Stafford, it’s reasonable to think the Rams see him as more than a two-year solution at quarterback so an extension could be in the cards at some point down the road," noted Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.

Stafford completed 64.2 percent of his passes in 2020 for 4,084 yards, 26 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. The trade cannot become official until March, per NFL rules.
