Coach Payton Close To Naming A Starting Quarterback For New Orleans
Taysom Hill or Jameis Winston?
The New Orleans Saints still have a huge decision to make on the quarterback spot following the retirement of future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees. As of Monday afternoon, no decision on who will starts in the opener against the Green Bay Packers has been made.
That's going to change very soon, as reports state that head coach Sean Payton is on the verge of finally naming which one of his two QBs is going to get the job.
On Monday, longtime NFL writer Peter King talked about the Saints and the upcoming decision. He has apparently spoken to Payton, who said he wants to announce who will start the opener prior to this weekend's preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals.
As of now, Winston is scheduled to be the starting QB in Monday's preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars after Hill started last week against the Baltimore Ravens.
“Payton told me he hopes to name his starter before the final preseason game Saturday against Arizona, so Winston’s performance with the first team for multiple series will be the most important game he’s played since he lost his job in 2019 in Tampa Bay,” King wrote Monday.
It has felt all along like Winston is going to be the starter, but the team does like Hill, who played well last year during Brees' absence.
There is one major asset for Winston, and that is the fact he started for five seasons in Tampa after being the team's first overall pick.
He just never got to the next level and was released in 2019, but it appears now he very well could get a shot again to be a starter.
Hill's story is a lot more of a grind. He made the team as an undrafted free agent in 2017 out of BYU, and last season in four starts, he went 3-1 for an injured Brees.
The coaching staff does like Hill, so who knows? He could get the nod to be the starter after all. For now, Payton is the only person who may or may not know who it will be.
