Aaron Rodgers '100 Percent' Considered Retiring
It wasn't just a bunch of baseless rumors. Aaron Rodgers really did consider calling it quits with the Green Bay Packers -- either by playing for someone else or retiring altogether.
"I did,” Rodgers told Erin Andrews of Fox in a televised interview. “Because they wouldn’t commit to me past 2021. So I figured if they want to make a change even though I just won MVP, why wait? They drafted my replacement, so let him play if that’s what you want. But I also could picture myself not playing, so it was a lot of things.”
Rodgers added that he "100 percent" contemplated retirement.
“I don’t feel like I have anything left to prove on the field,” he added. “I think it’s more about the enjoyment and the happiness and the quality of life that this game has afforded me over the years. And being able to 100 percent commit to everything that my job entails and there were many times during the offseason where I felt like I wasn’t able to fully do that. And until I was, it was a possibility.”
Neither he nor the Packers are saying anything about committing beyond this season, which kicked off Thursday for the NFL and Sunday for Green Bay. As everyone knows, it very well could be the last year for the QB and team together.
Rodgers, 37, went 372-of-526 passing with a career-high 48 touchdowns and just five interceptions last season, as the Packers finished 13-3.
