NFL To Punish Positive COVID Tests By Making Teams Take A Loss

Videos by OutKick

If you come down with a positive COVID-19 test, you lose. And as far as the NFL is concerned, you may not just lose a game. You could miss out on a playoff spot.

Per Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the league sent a memo to teams indicating that if a game can’t be rescheduled because of a COVID outbreak among unvaccinated players, the team with the outbreak will be forced to forfeit and take the L. The rule goes into effect for the upcoming season.

This, of course, is the league’s way of forcing everyone to be vaccinated and to pick on those who aren’t. Pelissero didn’t indicate what would happen or whether any rule will be imposed if a COVID outbreak should occur with vaccinated players.

The NFL is moving to a 17-game schedule, per team, over 18 weeks in 2021.

“We do not anticipate adding a ’19th week’ to accommodate games that cannot be rescheduled within the current 18 weeks of the regular season,” the memo read.

As Pelissero noted, the NFL’s message to teams is to “play on time or don’t play” and be credited with a loss.

This type of tough talk will draw lots of praise from the mainstream media, of course. But it very well could lead to teams not reporting positive COVID cases. Few would rather have a chance to win than rat out their own guys. Then again, the NFL may have their own personnel testing players.

Basically, who knows where this will lead. Perhaps it will lead to more vaccinations. Perhaps it will lead to move cover-ups. Perhaps it will lead to teams that seek a higher draft pick to report positive COVID tests that don’t actually exist in order to tank the season.

This may sound like a good idea by the NFL. But it’s probably not.

  1. I love the idea of teams reporting fake COVID tests to tank and get a higher draft pick.
As asinine as this whole idea is, and the only way the NFL can pressure players to get vaccinated, how would they treat positive tests from vaccinated players? Could that result in a forfeit? What if it’s a false positive, or an asymptomatic positive? Think about how dumb that sounds and what the ramifications could be.
I guess if they’re going to do that in the name of health and safety, they should probably make teams forfeit if someone gets the flu.

  2. Ok really how stupid is this going to get? Is there no one in the nfl circle who makes these decisions to say well guys every single day more and more people who’ve had the vaccine still get covid, the vaccine is as useless as a mask. We can’t enforce something as ignorant as this?

    • The Yankees/Red Sox debacle comes to mind. As long as anyone pretends that covid is “the deadliest disease ever”, there will be tons of unnecessary testing of elite athletes resulting in lots of positives, many of which will be false. The NFL has taken “stupid” to another level.

  3. Suppose Tampa or KC happen to have unvaccinated players and there is an outbreak and they happen to be in the fight for a wild card spot? Is the NFL saying they will have to forfeit and they will be ok with Mahomes or Brady staying home for the playoffs? It’s all talk because if there are teams with marquee players involved you know the games will be made up.

  4. It is really simple premise, playing football is a privilege, not a right. If they don’t want to adhere to the rules then they can sit out and not get paid. Many companies won’t hire people that use tobacco. They aren’t saying that those people aren’t allowed to use tobacco, they just won’t pay you to work for their company. Same thing here. And if any of you think a vaccine is more harmful than tobacco then you are less intelligent than I already believed you to be.

  5. Yep Vicki, guess you would think I’m a liberal because of my post. That is your short sighted brain working again. Proud Republican here but all of you seem to think vaccinations are a political thing for some reason.

    • Americans don’t mandate vaccines. Very simple. We have the Constitution to guide us.
      AKA, individual’s rights, proud RINO.

Stop pretending that it’s, “the vaccine.” It ‘s clearly something otherwise – experimental and ineffective, apparently?
It’s a private choice, and nobody else’s business.
And definitely not mandatory – EVER.

  6. Every day, new evidence suggest that the Pro Sports Leagues are (non-publicly) getting compensated by ‘someone’ to STRONGLY ENCOURAGE the experimental jab.
It makes NO business sense to create these hardships on players and teams with worthless ‘Covid health and safety protocols.’ [By the way, try typing the word, ‘covid,’ lowercase. My computer and phone automatically capitalize it… WTF? They don’t even do that for the word, ‘god’!]
Who is/are the ‘someone’? Big Pharma, the Govt, China, Elites??? All of the above, perhaps via ‘shell entities’???

Go, Deandre!! And all the others with the courage to say what needs saying, and hearing…

  7. On another note, Las Vegas and the rest of the gaming industry will have a say in this very soon.
I don’t see billion$ of action getting cancelled because somebody tested positive for a 99.95% survivable virus.
No way… They have deep pockets too.

  8. Goodell is actually trying to regulate the players over something? Did his little b-b balls finally drop? Or is he looking at the ratings and starting to figure out that he shouldn’t make decisions based on what he is told by the illiterate overpaid hood rats who are feeding off the failing overpaid halfway house he manages?

Nah he will cave like the woketard clown he is. He bent the knee he must stay on his knees like the coward he is – and he knows it.
