South Carolina Walk-On Gets Surprised With Scholarship
When he’s not running routes, University of South Carolina receiver Trey Adkins, a walk-on, has been spending his time delivering pizzas to help pay tuition. Following Tuesday’s Gamecocks practice, first-year head coach Shane Beamer rewarded the now former walk-on with a full scholarship, leaving a Columbia pizzeria with a likely opening for a delivery driver….
Beamer surprised the redshirt junior, announcing the news in front of his Gamecocks teammates.
A native of Simpsonville, SC, Adkins has five catches over his first two seasons and has twice been named to the SEC’s Fall Academic Honor Roll. After receiving the good news, Adkins made time to call home and announce his intentions to put the pizza career on hold.
Before factoring in room and board, ramen noodle, books, and those always mysterious college “technology fees”, a year at SC will cost about $13k for in-state residents. By comparison, the average delivery driver in South Carolina earns just under $14 an hour, per indeed. Without the scholarship, Adkins would need to clock around 929 hours slinging pies from house to house to cover his tuition.
With pizza in the past, Adkins can concentrate on delivering touchdowns for a Gamecocks squad that finished 2-8 last season, which was sixth in the SEC East division.
