Shane Beamer Defends The Stagnant South Carolina Offense, Play Calling

Shane Beamer's first season as head coach at South Carolina likely isn't going the way he envisioned. A big reason for the Gamecocks' middling season is an offense that has mostly been, well, offensive. South Carolina averages just 22 points per game through the season's first six weeks and have turned the ball over 10 times.

Still, Beamer sees signs of improvement.

“We have made progress. We’re close. Nobody’s happy with 3-3 and nobody is happy, statistically, where we are, from an offensive standpoint," Beamer said during a press conference earlier this week.

Since the opening weekend win against overmatched Eastern Illinois, the Gamecocks haven't scored more than 23 points in any one game. In last Saturday's loss to Tennessee, they tallied just 20 points. But Beamer seems unlikely to veer from his game plan.

"A lot of the pass concepts we threw against Tennessee the other day are the same ones we threw against Eastern Illinois. As the year goes on, we just want to be able to, more definitively, impose our will on people, in regards to running the football when we need to run it and throw it when we need to throw it.”

Beamer seems intent on using this season's remaining six games to continue to mold the offense's identity.

"There is a lot that I hope we can build upon and the biggest thing is just constantly develop depth and continue to get some continuity at certain positions, quarterback being one of them, the continuity part of it," said Beamer.

The Gamecock offense will try and fight their way back to respectability this Saturday with a home tilt against Vanderbilt. Despite their feeble offense, South Carolina still enters the game as 18.5 point favorites, per FanDuel Sportsbook.
