Ohio State Icon Cecil 'Cy' Souders Passes Away

Ohio State football legend Cecil "Cy" Souders passed away at the age of 100 on Monday night in his home in Hilliard, Ohio, according to The Columbus Dispatch.

The former Buckeye offensive and defensive end was a three-time All-American from 1942-1946 and a member of the 1942 Ohio State National Championship team.

Born in Bucyrus, Ohio, in 1921, Souders was the oldest living NFL alum at the time of his death. He began his career for the Buckeyes in 1939, before taking a two-year hiatus. Souders reported back to Ohio State in 1942 under new head coach Paul Brown, before leaving in 1944 to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Souders once again came back in 1946 to finish his career for the Buckeyes and caught a team-high nine passes for 157 yards. He was then named team MVP.

Souders was taken in the 25th round (259th overall) of the 1945 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins but ended up playing three seasons for the Detroit Lions before his career came to an end in 1949.

Upon retirement, Souders became a salesman for the Suburban Motor Freight Company, becoming executive vice president after 38 years.

Souders retired in 1984 and in 2002, was inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame.
